wantsshy asked:

Why do most SSRI’s cause weight gain? Do they actually slow down metabolism? No matter how little I eat ( and how well I eat ) it is just impossible to lose weight on antidepressants…. Argh!

    A few reasons:
SSRI’s raise serotonin, which calms you and lifts your mood and emotional responses. Generally, when you feel better, you feel more like eating (and eating more!).

However, everyones metabolism is affected according to their specific concentrations of neurotransmitters (serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine, histamine and others).
so depending upon how the SSRI is processed in your brain, your metabolism is affected.

You probably already know that the side effect of weight gain of the SSRI’s is also related to the dosage. The stronger the dose, the more possibility of side effects such as weight gain.
