Michael asked:

My brother recently adopted a dog that he was told was abused by his owner. The dog looks malnurished because he was only fed once about every three days. How can we help him gain weight? He is also full of fleas…what shampoo would work. He is a “senior” dog.

Take him to the vet and get him dipped, bathed and assessed. The vet can guide you in a healthy choice to get him back to a good weight.

Really any kind of medicated shampoo then get him flea drops. I adopted a dog that was nothing but a bag of bones but after normal meals and a few table scraps and a daily hot dog he was a normal weight in a couple of months… make sure he hasn’t got worms though..

a lot of people have mentioned frontline etc – these products contain poisens and are also harmful to pets. if you want to work towards your dog being the absolute healthiest he can be then research the following ideas:

fleas: there is a natural and safe product called Diatomaceous Earth (DE) only use the human grade NOT the pool grade version. this can also be used in the dogs food to get rid of internal worms. other methods is a clove of garlic in food each day which deters fleas, mosquitos etc

diet: do plenty of research – i feed the raw diet and will never look back – once the dog is healthy then it will be less inviting to hosts such as fleas. i would start by feeding 3-4 meals a day then cut down as he increases in weight.

in the meantine vacuum regularly – wash bedding reguarly – wash dog with a natural shampoo to drown the fleas on him.
